In order for concrete to be properly stained with an acid-based stain it must first be thoroughly cleaned using a soft washer and eco-friendly detergents to remove any surface dirt and dust, algae, moss, and other contaminants.

What Is The Difference Between Acid And Water Based Stains?

There are two types of stains that are used on concrete, one is acid-based, the other is a non-reactive water based.  Acid concrete stains are made using inorganic metallic salts that are dissolved in an acid/water based solution.  They work to actually penetrate the surface of the concrete causing a chemical reaction that creates a permanent bond.

Water based concrete stains are called "non-reactive" because they work to fill the pores of the concrete to produce a layer over top of the concrete without the chemical bonding action of an acid-based stain.  The color can be more consistent with a water based stain, but the look won't be as unique as an acid-based stain.
